Rhode Island Power Company Updates Electricity Delivery System

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Many power companies and the infrastructure that delivers electricity needs updating and upgrading. The Rhode Island Reliability Project is one of these projects. Nearly 750 power line poles have been installed thus far and National Grid is calling this the half-way point in the construction schedule of the Rhode Island Reliability Project. This project will strengthen the reliability of Rhode Island's power grid by increasing its capacity and allowing National Grid the flexibility to deliver electricity where it's needed when usage is at its highest.

The project includes the reconstruction of existing transmission lines and the addition of a new transmission line within an existing 21-mile corridor. More than 300 miles of power lines and nearly 750 new poles are being installed along with the installation of new equipment at substations in Rhode Island.

Transmission lines carry electricity from power plants to local distribution systems where the voltage levels are reduced in stages to provide electricity to homes and businesses. The new transmission line will enable more electricity to flow into the state as needed to meet customers' needs.

Your customers depend on your ability to deliver electricity to them every minute of every day. For electric line construction or when you need to improve the performance and reliability of the regional electric transmission system, contact ElecComm.

Wind Power needs Underground Cabling

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 06, 2012

With the increased interest in wind energy, states have been experimenting with wind power. Massachusetts also offers incentives to companies willing to invest in wind energy. Therefore Massachusetts has become one of the leaders in wind energy.

But turbines are not all that is needed for a wind farm. Those the turbines are what the public sees, less visible are the underground electric cables, which will connect the power generated by the turbines to the energy grid.

Electric Cables span the wind power industry all at various voltages. Wind turbines transmit power from their generators to ground-based equipment through large cables capable of handling many Amps.

To meet the energy needs of the communities they serve, wind farms require wind turbines and miles of underground medium, high, and low voltage cable.

Are you in the wind power industry? To ensure that the project is successfully connected to the grid, locally-source the installation. Contact ElecComm to install the project’s underground cabling.

Below is the original article from Boston.com:

BOSTON — About 4,000 customers remain without power a day and a half after a smoky electrical transformer fire in Boston's Back Bay area knocked out electricity to about 21,000.

NStar crews worked through the night into Thursday morning.

NStar said the goal is to get everyone back online by about noon Thursday.

The utility installed temporary cables and dozens of generators to bring back power until permanent repairs can be made, but the extensive work was taking longer than first expected.

There were still traffic restrictions, but no problems were reported. The Massachusetts Turnpike's Exit 22 ramps to Copley Square and Prudential Center were closed to allow for the electrical work.

All subway stations in the area reopened Wednesday afternoon.
