ElecComm Corporation Helped Restore Power to Much of Western Mass Over Thanksgiving Weekend – Pittsfield, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, December 05, 2014

Dozens of utility and tree crews worked around the clock to restore power through the Thanksgiving holiday and into the weekend. Thousands of residents in Hampshire and Franklin counties were without power through Thanksgiving and ElecComm Corporation worked on the holiday and through Sunday to help utility companies restore power in Western Mass.

The “large area outages” referred to the Hadley, Greenfield and Pittsfield areas.

As of 7 p.m. Thursday, just over 7,000 of the utility’s 213,544 customers did not have power, and most of them were in Franklin and Berkshire counties. Two communities were particularly hard hit, it was reported that all 710 customers in Worthington and more than half of its 892 customers in Leverett were without electricity.

There were also scattered power outages in Amherst, Easthampton, Hadley, Hatfield, Pelham, Southampton, Westhampton and Whately.

The heavy, wet snow took down many trees and lines in so many areas of Western Mass that ElecComm Corporation was called in to help utility companies restore power. It was a long and difficult restoration. WMECo also called in crews from N Star to assist. The challenge was in getting to some areas where the roads were blocked.

Several hours after the last snow fell, trees and limbs continued to come down Thursday morning. Branches continued to fall after the storm ended because of a phenomenon called “snap-back,” which occurs when there is heavy snow that does not easily fall off trees. That added to the problems of getting the lights back on.

When the power goes out, utility companies call ElecComm Corporation. For more information, contact us.

Underground High Voltage Cable: an Effective Alternative and Solution for Electric/Communications Distribution Systems - Wilmington, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, September 12, 2014

Underground high voltage cables are used when overhead lines are inappropriate or impractical to install in some locations in and around Wilmington. They not only are an effective alternative but they are also a justifiable solution for critical circumstances.

The superiority of underground high voltage cables in Wilmington, MA lies in their ability to reduce the visual impact in areas of natural beauty and to minimize potential health risks in areas close to communities and habitats. The increased security of supply has significantly lessened if not eliminated transmission losses and power disruptions resulting from extreme weather condition.

High voltage cables can be established underground with the use of modern technology. These underground cables are usually buried, installed in a tunnel, or contained in a concrete and covered trough. The number of UHVCs may double if a high capacity is required in the area.

Often underground high voltage cables are not preferred because the related costs are higher than that of overhead lines. However, the additional costs incurred can be offset by the use of less expensive XLPE cables which are insulated using plastic rather than oil. Also, the substantial benefits of less maintenance and repairs, and fewer power outages from the application of UHVCs can compensate for the over-and-above expenses

To find out more about the different applications of underground cables, contact the ElecComm.

Underground High Voltage Cable Network is an Affordable Solution - Providence, RI

Joseph Coupal - Friday, September 05, 2014

Underground high voltage cable networks in Providence, RI serve as an effective alternative to the aerial cables or overhead lines for various reasons, particularly for critical concerns. Overhead lines represent a majority of transmission throughout the world, but they are often considered unattractive in selected environments that are esthetically sensitive. Nowadays, underground cable systems continue to be implemented in congested, high-profile areas where installation of such is more profitable or practical.

Installing cables underground allows for efficient transmission across densely populated areas. And because these cables are located below the ground, they are less prone to damage from severe weather conditions such as strong wind, snow and lightning. As a result, interruptions may be less frequent. Underground high voltage cable network installation can also be considered for reducing the range of electromagnetic fields or EMF emission above ground that can cause negative effects on health.

Cable utilization practices have been rapidly changing through time with respect to configurations of systems and methods of installation. The benefits you get from the design, installation, and construction methods used in underground high voltage cable networks outweigh the technical and cost issues of these cables. They create a system that has been engineered to be reliable and durable and that functions at substantially lower cost.

To determine if underground high voltage cable networks are a better option than overhead lines, contact ElecComm.

Hire a Professional Technician to Do Fiber Optic Splicing - Boston, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, August 29, 2014

Fiber optic splicing in Boston, MA has been the mostly preferred alternative when it comes to telecommunications network projects. However, even if it simply involves joining two fiber optic cables together, it is still necessary to hire professional fiber optic technicians to do the job.

These technicians are well trained on the two methods of fiber optic splicing, namely fusion splicing and mechanical splicing. Being adept in these methods, you can also consult with them about which choice is best between them based on what fits your short and long-term economic and performance goals.

Fusion Splicing precisely aligns and permanently affixes two or more optical fibers together in order to produce a continuous connection between them that will result in a lower light loss during transmission. This method involves individual steps of preparing, cleaving, fusing, and protecting the fiber.

On the other hand, Mechanical Splicing does not weld the optical fibers to hold them in place. This method uses alignment devices designed to hold the optical fibers in a precisely aligned position. It makes use of a self-contained assembly rather than a permanent bond, resulting in a common centerline that enables light to pass from one fiber to another.

Consult a professional fiber optic technician from ElecComm to know which method can best work for your network.

Planning Storm Responses to Prepare for and Restore from Power Interruptions Due to Storm Events - Boston, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, August 08, 2014

Overhead power lines in Boston, MA make up a power delivery system which is used to transmit and distribute electric power long distances. These structures usually consist of one or more conductors and insulators, suspended by towers, that prevent possible interference at specific locations.

Overhead power lines are generally the most affordable alternative for the transmission and distribution of large quantities of electric energy to different, long distance locations. The supporting towers, either lateral or tubular in form, are made up of high standard materials. However, because they are all exposed in the open and carry numerous wires, they are susceptible to the destructive effects of weather and other natural calamities.

Problems arise when strong winds bring transmission wires down, inconveniencing everyone who is supplied by these lines. Storms can damage the connecting lines or wires no matter how well they were installed, knocking the power out. Storm events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms can uproot trees which may fall on their side hitting adjacent overhead lines. Relative to these adversities, an immediate storm response is required to prepare for and restore power from unplanned interruptions caused by a storm.

ElecComm has continually been exerting efforts to find out the optimal way to design, construct, and maintain power distribution structures to withstand the detrimental effects and harmful elements of nature. For more information, contact us.

Underground High Voltage Systems: Eliminating Hazards in Rural and Sensitive Locations - Wilmington, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, May 30, 2014

High Voltage cable systems serve a significant role in the scope of electricity transmission and distribution networks all over the world. Today, these systems can now be optimally installed in highly populated places or immensely sensitive environments, either underground or underwater.

Underground transmission cabling solutions in Wilmington, MA prevent the high-voltage cables from coming into contact with people or with other objects, while containing and controlling leakage current. High voltage underground cables can either be directly buried, gas-insulated, or placed in a trough or in tunnels. In direct-buried high voltage underground systems, conductors and insulators are buried below ground, showing no visible sign of the cables. Instead of being directly buried, high voltage cables are placed in a tunnel bored deep beneath the ground. Gas-insulated lines are a rather new technology that consist of tubular aluminum conductors which carry the current. The lines are then enclosed in an inflexible metallic tube filled with an insulating gas. This alternative is known for having a sheath that partially cancels magnetic field thereby reducing it. In trough, the conductors are placed closely paralleled to one another and contained in a concrete trough flush with the ground surface.

Underground High Voltage Systems have made it possible to reliably and conveniently transmit high-voltage power from production to consumption points all over the national grid. Replacing conventional overhead lines with underground systems wipes out the visual impact of large power lines. Underground transmission cabling solutions in Wilmington, MA also ensure that there are no audible noise and electromagnetic fields in particular areas.

Why Optical Power Meter are Used in Telecom Network Testing - Wilmington, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Since today's high-bandwidth networks rely on fiber optic infrastructure, an optical power meter must be used to check the power in fiber cables. It is a test instrument and a monitoring system to ensure that the network downtime is minimized.

The technicians who install or maintain any type of fiber networks should bring fiber optic power meters with them. These optical power meters are designed to help manage real-time conditions, control power generators, and solve related problems with a wide range of power measurement and a high accuracy test precision.

These testers are used to support clear-cut operations such as FTTx stationing or benchmarking, fiber network testing or troubleshooting, certification or verification capabilities, and documented loss or power level measurement. There are different kinds of power meters to choose from, depending on the type of network you are working on. Whether you use a general-purpose, high-accuracy, multi-functional, or a semi-automated optical power meter, it is just a matter of getting the right gear for what is required for a particular job.

Optical power meters are used to either measure the absolute power contained in a fiber optic signal or measure the optical loss in it. Accurate calibration is needed depending on which case this tool is used upon to come up with smooth sailing telecommunication networks.

To know more about optical power meters and telecommunication network, visit or contact the ElecComm.
